As a high school teacher once taught me – Expect the Unexpected. Easier said than done.
“To expect the unexpected shows a thoroughly modern intellect.”
Oscar Wilde, An Ideal Husband
I’ve been to a lot of amazing places (where I’ve been) and had some unforgettable, wonderful experiences. I’ve been pretty lucky. But it’s impossible to travel (or live) without taking some tumbles. Here’s a taste of the misadventures (big and small) that I’ve survived:
Stranger Danger
- Followed while walking alone late at night in Paris
- Almost kidnapped/robbed in Northern Vietnam
Transportation
- Missed flight because I left my ID at home
- Unattended baggage at LAX
- Stormy boat ride in Thailand
- Traveled on the wrong train:
Tough Breaks
- Hiking shoes fell apart before Himalayan trek
- Victoria Falls broke my camera
Medical Mishaps
- Tuberculosis – the real cost of traveling
- Monkey Bites (my poor friend!) in Ha Long Bay
- Bitten by Stinging Plankton in Hawaii
- Search for crutches in Cambodian markets
- Hospitals:
- Thailand (my poor friend!)
- Dominican Republic
